| Kathleen Nicastro was born in Rochester, NY, an only child to a father who was a tool and die maker and a mother who was a seamstress. She grew up in Webster, a suburb, and began writing at the age of 17. She has written 4 books of poetry, a book of short stories, numerous essays, her mother's memoirs and volumes of journals. She has published her work in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. She is currently an Administrative Consultant at the Eastman School of Music. In 1997, while a resident of Toronto, she began to paint, working exclusively with acrylic. As she began to explore the medium, she started to incorporate stained glass into her paintings. Three years later, (having moved to New Jersey) she took a course at Princeton High School in stained glass. (She was working at Princeton Theological Seminary at the time, and lived in nearby Plainsboro, NJ.) There, she made her first stained glass window. In April of 2001, she had her first solo show at the Erdman Gallery of Princeton Theological Seminary, and immediately thereafter had a summer-long group show with Anita Shapolsky at the Shapolsky Art Foundation in Jim Thorpe, PA. In 2002, she returned to Webster to take up residence in her family home, after her father's death. In July of 2003, she started her studio art company, The Alchemist of Sand, and continues to explore painting, glass, clay and mixed media. Her business launch at the "Clothesline Festival" of the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester was a success, and she is currently preparing for several upcoming exhibits.
